You always hear the saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but is it really true?
The wikipedia definition of Beauty says," Beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction."
Who defines beauty and what it means in our society?
Magazines? Celebrities?
No matter the age, most men and women feel the need to look a certain way to feel accepted and beautiful. Dove's "Campaign for real beauty" which was started in 2004, encourages women and young girls to look past the stereopyes and embrace their true, natural beauty. The campaign was started "to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition of beauty." The Dove mission statement: To make more women feel beautiful everyday by widening stereotypical views of beauty.
I know there are so many people out there, not just women, who struggle to fit into the mold of what society says is "beautiful". I fully support the Dove campaign for real beauty because I thinks it's so important for everyone to feel truly beautiful. Of course we all have those "bad hair", and "nothing to wear" days, but we need to shift our thinking and realize, that is not what makes a person beautiful. Not to say that I am exempt from these feelings, because I struggle with it everyday, but I hope one day when I wake up and look in the mirror with no makeup and bed head, that I will feel truly beautiful.
